Nitrification is a biological processwhich is crucial for the nitrogen treatment in sludge processing. This step makes it possible to largely minimize the health risks and environmental impact of the sludge.

 

What is nitrification?

Nitrification is the biological process of converting ammonia (NH3) into nitrates (NO3-), which is mainly carried out by specialized bacterial species such as Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter. This process is an important part of nitrogen removal in sewage treatment plants, where it takes place before sludge compaction and drying.

Nitrification reduces the toxicity of the ammonia in the sludge and converts it into a form that is less harmful to the environment when the sludge is used as fertilizer or enters natural waters. The process is particularly important in systems that have a high concentration of ammonia. Here it contributes to the stability of the ecosystem by preventing the formation of algal blooms, which are encouraged by high nitrogen levels.

 

Process and result of nitrification in detail

This is how nitrification takes place in the sludge processing area:

  1. Ammonia oxidation: Nitrosomonas bacteria oxidize ammonia to nitrite (NO2-).
  2. Nitrite oxidation: Nitrobacter bacteria convert nitrite into nitrate.
  3. Oxygen requirement: Nitrification requires oxygen, which is why sufficient aeration is essential.
  4. pH control: The process lowers the pH value, which is balanced by buffering.

After nitrification, the nitrogen in the sludge is present in a stable, less toxic form as nitrate. This facilitates the safe disposal or use of the dried sludge and reduces the risk to the environment. The nitrified sludge can be further dewatered and dried, resulting in a higher quality, usable product - whether in agriculture or as fuel.

 

Importance of nitrification for sludge drying

Nitrification is of great importance for sludge drying, as it improves the environmental compatibility of the end product and fulfills regulatory requirements for nitrogen control. By converting ammonia into nitrates, nitrification improves the quality of the treated sludge, reduces odor problems and enables safer and more efficient utilization of the dried material.
